I’ve never seen this before. The water in Georgia Strait looked like a tropical ocean. Apparently it is caused by a phytoplankton or algae species called coccolithophorid. The chalky hue to the colour is from the calcium carbonate scales of the creatures. Said to be harmless to fish or other sea animals but it is definitely a new phenomenon in local waters on the BC coast.
