Vanus Pyxis

If I don’t see
perfect circle of pure gold
above ancient cedar tree,
I will not miss it
when it is not here.

If I never turn my face
to warmth of rays
reaching between fir boughs,
I’ll not mind when rain
washes it instead.

Single rose will not be mourned
when it falls to pieces
nor shrivelled thread
of sweet pea vine
constrict my throat
if I’ve never bent to drink
their perfumed memories.

I’ll not miss the tingle of desire
sighing through my skin
if I never touch you.

Safe, secure, untouched heart
encased in ‘I don’t care,’
polished mediocrity –
no one gets hurt there.

*vanus – empty.
Pyxis – box made to hold precious ointment
