This little apple tree has been our inspiration for years now.
Growing on the side of the road, at the edge of the woods, under the telephone wires
and on a rock bluff.
Every spring we watch for it
somehow it gives us a boost to see
it too survived another winter
with no one to care for or protect it.
Deer must nibble the new green shoots,
bear must steal its fruit
but there it is,
blooming as profusely as if it was a pampered greenhouse tree.
Wild honeysuckle keeps it company, entwined in its branches.
Maybe that’s all anyone needs to keep showing up,
someone to grow along with it,
encouraging it to grow as best it can,
where it is, with what it has been given.
