Watching Ants

Like mushrooms on the forest floor,
houses appear overnight
where once deer and birds
shared solitude with trees.

Like ants single-minded march
to unknown destinations
we lug all we own from home to home
telling ourselves this will be the last time.

But once again convince ourselves
more and bigger is better
and profit
is our god.

Forests become ant hills,
woodland paths, highways
trees extinct and bird song only heard
through ear phones.

And we find ourselves searching
for the quiet, peaceful place
in the woods
that once was home.
