I’ve spent days on the couch
with Alden Nowlan,
took him to bed,
soaked in the tub together
and still, I wonder,
where is his greatness.
Is it in his prolific scribbling
or in his disciplined mailing out
to any and all
no matter the rejections
or reviews.
Is a great writer
only to have lots of stamps,
ambition
and a tough hide
or is it in knowing
one’s greatness,
needing to share
it with someone,
anyone who cared to notice.
