Had We Been On That Hill Side

Had we been on that hill-side
that day of long ago
when crowds of hungry families
were wondering where to go,
we’d strike up a committee,
a floor and colour plan,
we’d decorate, delegate
and organize each man.

One would run to Bethany
to order up the fish,
another would make lists of all
who’d bring a fancy dish.
It would turn out fine because
we’d be so organized,
a grander banquet none would see,
the memory of it prized.

And as we cleared the food away
and talked of our success,
we’d feel an emptiness inside
that no one would confess.
In all our plans and bustle
somehow we failed to see
some loaves and fish,
a man, a boy
alone beneath a tree.
