Paddling Against The Tide

Sometimes I feel
I am paddling against the tide.
I’m thankful for all I have,
I just don’t seem to be getting anywhere.
I want to get done,
be organized,
but that seems as possible
as tidying up that beach out there.

Every change of tide
messes it up again,
and the tide changes a lot in this house.

High tide
brings in valuable, unique things
but it also brings sand and garbage.
Stench of rotting seaweed
cannot compare to the disagreeable odour
of my anger and critical spirit
as I react to all the driftwood
that gets in my way.

I cannot stop the tide,
I wouldn’t want to,
but I would like to learn
how to find those rare
and valuable pieces of my day,
then wait patiently
for the worthless debris
to wash away again.

Wash it away
before a very high tide
lodges it permanently
in my soul.
